Which US Airport: JFK, Newark, LAX or O'Hare

Pick a US entry airport by route: JFK vs Newark to Manhattan, LAX FlyAway $12.75, O'Hare Blue Line $5, and when an open-jaw ticket wins.

Fly into the airport that matches the first week of your trip, not the one with the cheapest headline fare. For most visitors from Europe, Australia or Canada that means choosing among four gateways: JFK and Newark for New York and the East Coast, LAX for California and the West, and O’Hare when Chicago or a Midwest hub connection is the point. A poorly matched airport can add a long transfer or force an unnecessary domestic flight.

JFK: broadest long-haul choice, two-step into Manhattan

JFK has the broadest long-haul choice of the four gateways on this page. Its official directory lists more than 70 operating airlines. Getting into Manhattan is a two-step, not a door-to-door train.

The MTA’s own airport guide is clear. AirTrain costs $8.75 on top of whatever you pay for the subway or the railroad, unlimited MetroCards and passes do not cover it, and kids under five ride free. Take the subway and you’re looking at about $11.75 all-in for most riders. Take the Long Island Rail Road from Penn Station, Grand Central or Atlantic Terminal to Jamaica and the CityTicket is $5.25 off-peak or $7.25 peak, then you still tap $8.75 for AirTrain. Sit near the front of an eastbound LIRR train so you’re closer to the AirTrain when you get off at Jamaica.

If your trip is a week in New York City before anything else, JFK is fine. If your first night is Midtown and you’re carrying a lot of bags, price Newark before you lock the ticket - the train math’s simpler, and you won’t wonder whether you tapped OMNY twice.

Newark: the Midtown rail airport

Newark Liberty sits in New Jersey, which sounds farther from Manhattan than it is. NJ Transit’s airport page clocks the rail leg to New York Penn Station at about 30 minutes, with an adult ticket at $17.25 that already includes the AirTrain fee. You don’t buy AirTrain separately. Buy the ticket in the app or at a machine before you board - buying on the train adds a $5 surcharge.

Lower Manhattan is a different path: NJ Transit to Newark Penn ($12.30), then PATH ($3.00) to World Trade Center, about 45-55 minutes total. That combination’s cheaper than the Midtown ticket and still beats a tunnel-taxed car ride for a solo traveler.

Two caveats, and the first one is live right now. The AirTrain is currently replaced by a Port Authority shuttle bus from 5:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on most weekdays, through late August 2026, while the AirTrain Newark Replacement Program runs. It still operates normally on Saturdays and Sundays. A bus between the terminals and the rail station is slower and clumsier with luggage than the monorail, so on a weekday morning add 30 to 60 minutes to whatever the timetable promises, and check the NJ Transit station advisory for your own dates - the end date has moved before. Second, Newark works best when it appears on a through ticket from your home airport to the final destination. A separate self-connection gives you no protection if the inbound flight is late. For an East Coast itinerary that starts in New York, EWR offers a straightforward one-ticket rail trip to New York Penn Station.

LAX: West Coast default, bus not metro

Los Angeles International is the West Coast gateway in this comparison. There’s no single subway ride from the terminals into downtown the way Chicago has. LAWA operates the FlyAway nonstop bus between LAX and Union Station, plus a separate Van Nuys route.

LAWA’s fare page sets the one-way FlyAway price at $12.75. Tickets are valid for 60 days from purchase, and mobile tickets should be activated only when boarding. Cash and non-contactless cards aren’t accepted on the bus; use a mobile or web ticket, a contactless Visa or Mastercard, Apple Pay, or Google Pay. Check the current schedule and live traffic rather than relying on a fixed travel-time estimate. For the full curb-to-downtown comparison - FlyAway versus the downtown taxi flat fare and LAX-it rideshare pickup - see LAX to downtown Los Angeles.

Fly into LAX when your first nights are in Los Angeles, Santa Monica, or you’re starting a California road trip. If the whole trip is New York and New England, don’t pay for a LAX arrival just to “see California later” - that’s how people lose a day to a coast-to-coast reposition.

O’Hare: the hub that behaves like a metro stop

O’Hare is the Midwest machine. CTA’s airport page is the one to bookmark: the Blue Line runs 24 hours, the fare between O’Hare and downtown is $5 or less, and the normal ride is 40-45 minutes. The station sits under Terminals 1, 2 and 3; Terminal 5 uses a free airport shuttle train to reach it. CTA’s comparison puts a taxi around $40 and 25-90 minutes depending on traffic, so the train offers the predictable published fare while road travel varies.

Choose ORD when you’re staying in Chicago, or when your itinerary is a domestic web of Midwest and mountain flights. If your final destination lacks a nonstop from home, compare through-ticket connections at ORD with the other airline hubs rather than buying separate tickets.

Open jaw: when one airport is the wrong answer

An open-jaw (multi-city) ticket flies you into one city and home from another. Into JFK, out of LAX. Into LAX, out of ORD. Into EWR, out of MIA. You stop paying to reverse your own itinerary.

It’s the right tool when your trip is a line, not a loop: East Coast week then California week, or Chicago plus a national-park fly-drive that ends in Las Vegas or Denver. It’s the wrong tool when you’re based in one city the whole time and the “savings” are imaginary once you add a domestic reposition.

Search it as a multi-city itinerary on one ticket, not two one-ways. Separate tickets give you no protection if the inbound flight’s late. Same-ticket open jaws keep the airline on the hook for the misconnect. Compare a few date combinations rather than one magic pair - the open-jaw premium swings more than you’d think.

If you need a car on day one

Airport rentals often include concession-recovery or customer-facility fees, but that doesn’t make a downtown branch automatically cheaper. Compare full totals for the same dates and vehicle class, then include the cost and time needed to reach an off-airport branch. If your first 24 hours are entirely urban - Manhattan, downtown Chicago, central LA - delaying pickup may also save a day of rental and parking. Our renting a car in the USA guide covers age fees, insurance and one-way drops; dig into rental car insurance in the USA for CDW versus card coverage, and driving in the USA for tolls and gas once you have the keys.

One more paperwork check before any of these gateways matter: your ESTA or visa has to be valid before the airline will board you. The airport choice is step two.

What to book

If you’re connecting through a US airport, Global Entry and TSA PreCheck is the other paperwork that decides whether a faster security lane even exists for your passport.

If your trip is a week in New York City before anything else, JFK is fine. If your first night is Midtown and you’re carrying a lot of bags, price Newark before you lock the ticket - the train math’s simpler, and you won’t wonder whether you tapped OMNY twice. Once you’ve picked JFK, JFK to Manhattan covers the taxi flat rate’s real total and why the LIRR sometimes beats the subway on more than just speed.

  • New York city break: Newark if Midtown rail simplicity matters; JFK if the long-haul schedule is clearly better.
  • California start: LAX, then FlyAway or a pre-booked car only if you’re leaving the basin immediately.
  • Chicago or Midwest web: O’Hare and the Blue Line.
  • Coast-to-coast trip: open-jaw into one, out the other - price the multi-city before you “save” on a cheap round-trip to the wrong coast.
