LAX to Los Angeles: FlyAway, Rideshare and Taxi

FlyAway to Union Station costs $12.75 and drops you on Metro, Amtrak and Metrolink. A licensed taxi to the published downtown box is a $60.35 flat fare for the whole group. Rideshare can still be door-to-door, but you won’t get picked up at the terminal curb - you’ll ride a free shuttle to LAX-it first. “LAX to Los Angeles” sounds like a single destination, but it isn’t one. Downtown is one trip. Santa Monica, Hollywood or Disneyland are different math.

The short answer

Fares checked 10 August 2026 on LAWA and LADOT pages. One caveat on the taxi line: the flat fare in the current LADOT board resolution is $60.35, but the rate card still posted on the LADOT site shows the older $49.95 plus a $4 LAX surcharge, and aggregators repeat the old number. Ask the driver to confirm the flat fare before you get in - you should never pay more than $60.35 to the downtown box. Rideshare stays out of the price column on purpose - see below.

FlyAway: $12.75 to Union Station

If your hotel is downtown, or you’re connecting onto Metro Rail, Metrolink or Amtrak, the Union Station FlyAway is the cleanest fixed-price move. One adult ticket is $12.75. Two kids under five ride free with each paying adult. Buy in the FlyAway app, online, or with a contactless card on the bus - cash and old-school swipe cards are rejected. Tickets stay valid for 60 days after you buy them, but only activate the mobile ticket when the bus is actually there; once it’s activated you’ve got three hours to board.

At LAX you board on the Lower/Arrivals level in front of your terminal, at the blue FlyAway signs. The bus is marked for Union Station (Van Nuys is a separate FlyAway route for the Valley). On the return, Union Station boards at Bus Stop 1 on the Patsaouras Transit Plaza east of the main hall; the ticket kiosk sits at the south end near Bus Bay 1.

Published everyday tables (checked 10 August 2026) run Union Station to LAX from 3:00 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., and LAX to Union Station from 5:40 a.m. to 1:10 a.m. on roughly half-hour headways. There are no seat reservations. LAWA asks you to show up about ten minutes early and to leave slack for traffic. Free-flow driving on this corridor is about 19 miles / 28 minutes on an empty road; your bus won’t beat a quiet midnight drive, and it won’t match a stuck 5 p.m. freeway either - budget the schedule, not the OSRM fantasy.

One practical catch: FlyAway ends at Union Station, not at your hotel door. For many downtown stays that’s a short Metro hop or a walkable last mile. If you’re sleeping in Santa Monica, West Hollywood or near USC south of the 10, you’re adding another transfer - and at that point the “cheap” bus stops being cheap in time.

LAX-it: why the curb is not your pickup

Uber, Lyft and taxis do not pick up at the terminal doors anymore. After baggage claim, follow the green column wraps on the arrivals level to the free LAX-it shuttle. The shuttle is ADA accessible and drops you at the dedicated lot where app cars and taxis stage. Budget the shuttle ride as part of the trip - it’s short, but it’s real time you won’t see in a downtown-minutes estimate.

Drop-offs still happen on the upper/departures curb for private cars. Pickups for friends and family use the outer curb rules LAWA publishes separately; if someone’s collecting you without an app, read the current flylax pickup page before they circle Terminal 3 for twenty minutes.

Taxi: the $60.35 flat fare

Licensed Los Angeles taxis use a published flat fare between LAX and a defined downtown box: the area bounded by Alameda Street, the Santa Monica Freeway, the Harbor Freeway and Cesar Chavez Avenue, plus Union Station and Chinatown. As of the LADOT Board schedule checked 10 August 2026 (ITEM #9 after the 21 August 2025 hearing), that flat fare is $60.35 per trip for the group, either direction. Trips that start at LAX also carry a $25.00 group minimum when the flat fare does not apply.

Confirm the destination sits inside that boundary before you commit. A hotel in Koreatown west of the Harbor Freeway, or south of the 10, is usually metered, not flat. Tip is separate. Rates are maxima set by the city; ask the driver to confirm the flat before the car rolls, the same way you’d check a meter start.

Outside the flat box, the published meter (same ITEM #9) starts at $3.65 flag drop, then $0.39 per 1/9 mile ($3.51 per mile) plus wait time at $0.39 per 37 seconds, with a $0.15 per-trip data-sharing surcharge. Those numbers matter more for Hollywood or Santa Monica runs than for Union Station.

Metro: the $5 route most arrivals never see

There are three shuttle colors on the Arrivals level, not two. Blue takes you to FlyAway, green to LAX-it, and pink to the LAX/Metro Transit Center - a free ride either way. From the center the C Line and K Line put you into the rail network, and Metro charges $1.75 a ride with a $5 daily cap and free transfers within two hours of your tap. Two adults reach downtown for less than the FlyAway fare for one.

The honest catch is time and bags. With a connection you are looking at 60 to 90 minutes to most of the city rather than the 30 to 45 a bus or car takes, the stations have stairs and lifts rather than porters, and late at night the frequency drops. Rideshare: quote in the app, not on this page

Uber and Lyft will show a price before you request. That number moves with demand, traffic and the time of day, and neither company publishes a fixed LAX-to-downtown tariff you can treat as a fact. So this page doesn’t invent one. Open the app after you clear customs, compare it to $12.75 (FlyAway) and $60.35 (taxi flat), and decide with luggage and destination in mind.

If you’re three people heading to a downtown hotel inside the flat box, the taxi’s group flat fare often beats three separate FlyAway tickets plus a last hop - do the arithmetic for your group size. Solo with a backpack, FlyAway still wins on money almost every time.

Private transfer when you want the price locked

A pre-booked car is the option for overnight long-hauls, oversize luggage, or a hotel that’s awkward on transit. You’re paying for certainty: a set pickup instruction and a price you saw before the wheels left the gate. Compare it against the taxi flat if you’re downtown-bound; for Santa Monica or the Westside it’s often competing with rideshare, not with FlyAway.

When FlyAway is the wrong tool

What I’d actually do

Landing mid-morning with a carry-on and a downtown hotel: FlyAway. Landing at midnight with two checked bags and a hotel inside the flat-fare box: taxi from LAX-it at the published flat. Landing with a family of four headed to Santa Monica: open rideshare and a transfer quote side by side, because FlyAway leaves you on the wrong side of town. The $12.75 bus is excellent at the job it was built for. It isn’t a magic door to every Los Angeles zip code.
