ATL Airport to Downtown: MARTA, Taxi and Rideshare

MARTA from Hartsfield-Jackson costs $2.50 and averages about 16 minutes to Five Points. A licensed taxi still quotes a flat $37.50 to downtown for one passenger (the published Zone 1 rate, already including the $1.50 airport surcharge). That’s the real decision tree for most arrivals: two-fifty on the train when you can walk with your bags, or a fixed cab fare when a door matters more than the difference.

Atlanta is unusual among big US hubs. Unlike Sea-Tac, where the meter is the only regulated number, ATL still publishes flat taxi zones for Downtown, Midtown and Buckhead. The train is still cheaper by a factor of fifteen, and the station is literally inside the Domestic Terminal - but only if you land in the right building.

Find the station before you chase a curb

MARTA’s Airport Station sits between North and South baggage claim on the west end of the Domestic Terminal. Red and Gold line trains terminate there. You don’t need a shuttle to reach the platform from a domestic arrival. Station agents and a full-service RideStore are on site.

International arrivals are the catch. The rail station is not in the Maynard H. Jackson Jr. International Terminal. Take the free airport shuttle from the International Terminal arrivals level to Domestic baggage claim, or ride the airport’s Plane Train to the Domestic Terminal Baggage Claim stop, then walk to MARTA. The reverse is true when you leave town: check whether your airline lets you check in for an international flight from the Domestic side before you drag bags across the campus.

Just outside Domestic baggage claim you’ll also see the free SkyTrain to the rental-car center. That’s not MARTA. Don’t board it if you mean to ride into the city.

MARTA: $2.50, Red or Gold, north to downtown

Trains on the Red and Gold lines run from Airport Station into the city. For downtown hotels near Five Points, Peachtree Center, Georgia State or CNN Center, ride north and exit at Five Points or Peachtree Center. MARTA’s Five Points station page lists 16 minutes average travel time to the airport - that is schedule time on a moving train, not door-to-door from your gate.

Published train hours on itsmarta.com: weekdays 4:45 a.m. to 1 a.m., weekends 6 a.m. to 1 a.m. Late arrivals after those windows need a car.

After 8:30 p.m., service toward Buckhead, Medical Center, Dunwoody, Sandy Springs or North Springs can require a Gold (Doraville) train from the airport, then a transfer to a Red (North Springs) train at Lindbergh Center. Downtown riders usually stay on the northbound train without that hop.

Paying in August 2026: Better Breeze

MARTA launched its Better Breeze fare system on 28 March 2026. The old-and-new faregate overlap ran through 2 May 2026; by late August you should see only the new gates. What stays the same is the fare: $2.50 one way on rail, with up to four free transfers inside three hours. Reduced fare is $1.

How you pay has changed. You can:

• Tap a contactless credit or debit card or a mobile wallet at the faregate
• Buy a new orange Breeze card ($2 plus fare) or a single-use paper ticket ($1 plus fare) at the new touchscreen machines or the Airport RideStore
• Use cash at machines and RideStores (exact change on buses; cash on a bus is one-way only with no transfers)

Use the same payment method when you transfer. A bank card and a mobile wallet linked to the same account count as two different methods - tap the wrong one and you’ll pay again. Don’t pass a card back for a second person; each rider needs their own fare media.

The Airport RideStore hours published with Ways to Pay list weekday service (8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.) and closed weekends - so a Sunday arrival should plan on tap-to-pay or a machine, not staffed help.

Taxi flats: Downtown, Midtown, Buckhead

Licensed taxis at ATL still work on published flat rates for the Atlanta Business District. Confirm the zone with the dispatcher or driver before you roll - the numbers below are from the airport’s official ground-transportation page as of this check:

Outside those zones the meter applies: $3.50 for the first 1/8 mile, $0.30 each additional 1/8 mile, a $1.50 vehicle trip fee, and $24 per hour of waiting time.

Don’t confuse the taxi flats with the shared-ride van maximums listed on the same airport page ($16.50 / $18.50 / $30 per person for Downtown / Midtown / Buckhead). Those are different products with different stalls.

Tipping 15-20% on top of a flat is customary. Two adults to downtown: $37.50 + $2 = $39.50 before tip. Four adults on MARTA still total $10 if everyone taps.

Rideshare: quote the app, do not invent a number

Uber and Lyft pick up under airport ground-transportation rules. Open the app after baggage claim and follow the signed rideshare path - pickup staging has moved more than once in recent years, so trust the live signs and the app pin over a blog post from last summer.

Neither company publishes a fixed ATL-to-downtown tariff you can treat as a fact, so this page doesn’t invent one. On a quiet Tuesday morning the app can undercut a $37.50 flat. On a Falcons Sunday or a Convention Center turnaround, surge can blow past it. Solo with a backpack, MARTA still wins on money almost every time. Three adults splitting a car can make rideshare competitive - run the quote, then stack it against the published taxi flat.

When a pre-booked car beats the flat fare

A pre-booked private transfer earns its keep when you land after MARTA closes, when you are hauling oversized gear, when your hotel is outside the flat zones, or when you simply want a name on a sign at baggage claim instead of a walk to the Ground Transportation Center. You pay for a price and pickup instruction you saw before the flight.

Compare any quoted transfer to the $37.50 downtown flat and the $2.50 rail fare. For a Midtown hotel the published taxi number is $39.50; for Buckhead it is $49.50. Further out - Alpharetta, Marietta, the airport hotels on Virginia Avenue - you are on the meter or a pre-booked price, not a flat zone.

Who should take what

Carry-on, daytime, hotel near Five Points or Peachtree Center: MARTA. Tap $2.50, ride north, walk. You’ll spend less on the train than on the sandwich you bought waiting for the bag carousel.

Two adults, two rolling bags, Midtown hotel, evening arrival: The $39.50 Midtown flat (plus $2 for the second passenger) is predictable. MARTA still works if you’re willing to walk or hop a short rideshare from the Midtown or Arts Center station.

International arrival after midnight, three checked bags, hotel in Buckhead: MARTA is closed or nearly so. The Buckhead flat is $49.50 for one, or book a transfer so someone meets you at the International Terminal instead of sending you through the Domestic shuttle first.
