Mount Rainier 2026: Paradise Open, Sunrise Closed

There is no timed entry at Mount Rainier in 2026. You still pay $30 a car for seven days, and you still need a parking space. Paradise is open. Sunrise Road is closed until further notice because of the Grand Park 2 Fire. If last year’s reservation email is still in your inbox, ignore it - the park dropped the system on purpose this season.

That split is the whole trip. The south side, via Nisqually and Longmire, is the working park right now. The northeast side that every brochure still photographs is not. Don’t build a Saturday around a visitor center the hours page lists as closed.

What’s actually open today

Checked against NPS hours and road status on 17 August 2026 (those pages last updated 11 August):

The park is open 24 hours. The mountain doesn’t care. The lots do. On the busiest summer weekends NPS says waits at Nisqually can run over an hour. Their own fix is boring and it works: be through the gate before 10 a.m. or after 2:30 p.m., or come midweek. The February news release also suggested before 7 a.m. or after 4 p.m. if you want empty trails. Pets stay in the car and the campground - they’re not allowed on trails.

$30 at the gate, and no reservation to buy

Entry is $30 per private vehicle for seven days, $25 for a motorcycle, $15 if you walk or bike in and you’re 16 or older. Kids under 16 are free. The park is cashless at the booths. If you only carry bills, buy a $30 vehicle pass in Ashford before you reach Nisqually - NPS lists Ashford Creek Pottery, Ashford Valley Grocery, Ashford General Store and Whittaker Mountaineering. Washington’s Discover Pass is for state parks. It does nothing here.

A $55 Rainier-only annual pass, sold to US citizens and residents, is the right buy if you’ll come back this year. The America the Beautiful annual pass is $80 for US citizens and residents, $250 for everyone else. Fee-free days on the 2026 calendar include 25 August, the National Park Service’s 110th birthday - entrance is waived that day for US citizens and residents, other fees can still apply, and the parking problem does not take the day off.

There is no $2 timed ticket on Recreation.gov this year. Do not refresh an old Sunrise corridor page from 2025. The park said in February it would manage crowding with parking, not a reservation window, and as of mid-August that’s still the rule.

Paradise: 5,400 feet and the trails that still work

Paradise sits at 5,400 feet, 12 miles and about 25 minutes above Longmire. The Jackson Visitor Center runs 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. through 26 September 2026, with exhibits, the park film, a cafeteria and a gift shop. The historic Paradise Inn (1916, 121 rooms, 5,420 feet) is the overnight version of the same bench, generally mid-May into early October.

Snow can sit on the paths into June and sometimes July. Stay on the trail - the meadows get wrecked when people cut corners, and rangers are not shy about saying so. Useful walks from the lots, distances from the park’s Paradise page:

• Skyline Trail to Myrtle Falls - 1 mile, wheelchair accessible with assistance
• Nisqually Vista - 1.2 miles, glacier view, stroller-friendly
• Alta Vista - 1.7 miles
• Skyline loop - 5.5 miles, the one that actually climbs through the meadows toward the Tatoosh views

If the upper lot is a parking circus, the one-way Paradise Valley Road still connects across to Stevens Canyon. Reflection Lakes is about 3 miles east of Paradise on Stevens Canyon Road when you want the postcard with fewer elbows.

Paradise once took 1,122 inches of snow in a single season (1971-72). The low mark on the official station is 266 inches in 2014-15. You don’t need those numbers to enjoy August wildflowers. You do need them to believe a September storm can shut the road above Longmire with no debate.

Sunrise is closed. Plan as if it will stay that way.

Sunrise is the northeast high country, the other famous meadow, the place Instagram still serves you. As of the 11 August 2026 road report, Sunrise Road is closed due to the Grand Park 2 Fire until further notice. The visitor center is closed on the same fire order. White River Road to the campground is closed. Trails that start from those roads are closed. Bring water and food if you’re elsewhere in the park - that note is on the closure itself, because services on that side are gone with the road.

Don’t “just check when you get to Enumclaw.” Drive to Paradise instead, or pick a trail on the open south and east roads (Stevens Canyon, SR 123, SR 410 were open on 11 August). If the fire order lifts, NPS will say so on the alerts bar. Until that sentence changes, Sunrise is not a backup plan. It’s a closed gate.

Longmire: the year-round floor of the park

Longmire is the historic district at 2,700 feet, the place you pass whether you like it or not. The National Park Inn is the only in-park hotel that stays open all year: 25 rooms, a dining room, a general store. The museum runs 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through 26 September (it may close at midday). The wilderness desk there is the summer permit counter, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. through 12 October.

In winter this is the entire car-accessible park. The road from Longmire to Paradise opens most winter days and gates at Longmire every evening, plus whenever snow or avalanche risk makes the climb stupid. Call 360-569-2211 for the recorded road line, or read the alerts the morning you go. GPS that points at 55210 238th Avenue East dumps you at park headquarters in Ashford, not the entrance. For Nisqually, NPS wants 39000 State Route 706 E, Ashford, WA 98304.

The drive from Seattle

NPS’s own table, not a routing app: Seattle to Paradise via SR 706 is 107 miles and about 2.5 hours. The route is I-5 south to SR 512 (exit 127), east to SR 7, south to Elbe, then SR 706 through Ashford to the Nisqually Entrance. The SR 410 / Enumclaw line is 109 miles and about 3 hours, and it only helps if the east-side roads you need are actually open.

You will sit in a car. There is no train to Paradise. On a July Saturday the 2.5 hours can grow at the booth, which is why the 10 a.m. / 2:30 p.m. advice exists. Tunnel height on Stevens Canyon is 12 feet 6 inches if you’re in something tall. Carbon River and Mowich are not a scenic alternative right now - the SR 165 bridge has been closed to cars, bikes and people since a WSDOT notice on 22 April 2025, with no detour.

Sleep in the park or in Ashford

Two inns sit inside the boundary, both run by Rainier Guest Services (360-569-2275). Paradise Inn is the 1916 landmark at 5,420 feet, 121 rooms, generally mid-May through early October. National Park Inn is the 25-room year-round building at Longmire. Book those on the concessioner’s site, not as an afterthought the Friday you land.

Everyone else sleeps in Ashford or Packwood and drives in. Those rooms go early on wildflower weekends. A night in Seattle plus a 2.5-hour pre-dawn run is the other honest pattern: you’re through Nisqually before the line forms, you hike, you drive back. Mount Rainier is America’s fifth-oldest national park (2 March 1899), 14,410 feet, and it drew 2,405,012 visits in 2025. The mountain is not a secret. The closed roads are the part people still get wrong.

For the rest of the state - Olympic, the ferries, wine country - start with the Washington State travel guide. Most people fly into Seattle and pick the car up there. If you’re stacking parks, Olympic National Park is the rainforest-and-coast counterpart, not a substitute for this volcano. The rental itself, including one-way drop fees, is in renting a car in the USA.

Go to Paradise. Leave Sunrise off the itinerary.

Until NPS reopens Sunrise Road, a Rainier day is a Nisqually day. Pay the $30, beat the 10 a.m. line or skip it after 2:30, walk a meadow trail you can actually reach, and treat the fire closure as a fact rather than a rumor you’ll outsmart at the junction. The park did you a favor by killing timed entry this year. It did not reopen a burned corridor to make the map look balanced.
