Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta: Tickets and Timing

The 2026 Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta runs October 3-11. General admission is $22.24 per person per session online ($20 plus a $2.24 processing fee) as of August 2026, and children 12 and under are free. You’ll buy a ticket for either a morning block (mass ascensions and Dawn Patrol) or an evening block (glows and fireworks on scheduled nights) - not both on one pass.

Hotels within twenty miles of Balloon Fiesta Park often sell out by summer. If you’re flying in from the UK, Canada or Australia, treat room inventory as the bottleneck, not the ticket price.

Quick planning numbers

Sessions are weather-dependent and nonrefundable. If wind or storms scrub a launch, Fiesta typically rain-checks that session toward another 2026 date rather than refunding - keep the ticket.

Morning mass ascension vs evening glow

Mornings are why people set alarms. Dawn Patrol balloons go up in the dark so pilots read wind layers before the main launch. Then hundreds of balloons inflate on the field in what’s called a mass ascension - the moment you’ve seen in every photo montage.

Evenings are a different show. On scheduled nights, balloons stay tethered and fire their burners together for a Balloon Glow, sometimes paired with fireworks or the Night Magic program. There are no evening sessions on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or the final Sunday in 2026, so don’t build your whole trip around a midweek glow unless you’ve checked the calendar.

One ticket covers one session on one day. It does not buy you dawn and dusk on the same date. Most first-timers pick one morning plus one evening on different days rather than trying to sprint both in twenty-four hours.

Tickets: where to buy and what to skip

Buy only through balloonfiesta.com or the linked TicketSpice checkout. The organizer states plainly that no third-party online seller is authorized. Resale sites can leave you with invalid barcodes or prices that don’t match the gate.

Children 12 and under do not need a general admission ticket. Everyone else pays per session. A 2026 general admission ticket is valid for any single session during the nine-day run - you choose the day when you arrive, not when you click buy.

New Mexico residents get free general admission on Monday, October 5, 2026 by showing a photo ID or utility bill with a New Mexico address at a ticket booth. Parking still costs money, and the freebie is that Monday only.

If you’re already touring the state on Route 66, stack Fiesta with the New Mexico travel guide and a night or two in Santa Fe - the capital is an hour north and spreads hotel demand away from the park.

Park & Ride vs driving to Balloon Fiesta Park

Balloon Fiesta Park sits at 4401 Alameda Blvd NE on Albuquerque’s north side. On big mornings the parking fields become a maze of shuttles, vendors and pedestrians. Park & Ride bundles round-trip bus transport with one session admission:

• Advance purchase (before midnight on your travel day): $32.59 for adults 13-61, $30.52 for seniors 62+, $20.17 for children 6-12, free for 5 and under.
• Day-of purchase costs more - $35.70 for adults, for example.

There is no Park & Ride service Monday through Wednesday, which matters if your hotel package assumed a bus every day.

Driving yourself is fine if you accept a long walk from the lot and a slow exit. Bring layers: October mornings at 5,000 feet feel colder than the afternoon forecast suggests, and wind decides everything anyway.

Where to sleep during Fiesta week

Albuquerque hotels along I-25 and near the park price like a different city the first two weekends of October. Booking in June or July for October isn’t paranoid - it’s normal. If ABQ rates shock you, compare Santa Fe or Rio Rancho west of the river; you’ll trade a longer pre-dawn drive for a room that still exists. Know what you’re trading before you book: Santa Fe is about 56 to 58 miles from Balloon Fiesta Park, a bit over an hour on I-25 with no traffic, and mass-ascension mornings are exactly when there is traffic. The southeast edge of Rio Rancho, along the NM-528 hotel strip, is the softer version - roughly 7 miles and a quarter of an hour - close enough that you can still make a 5 a.m. gate without driving in the dark for an hour. Rooms at the north end of the city are a different proposition: closer to 15 miles and half an hour.

The state’s wider loop - White Sands south or Carlsbad Caverns near the Texas line - fits better before or after Fiesta than on a mass-ascension morning. You won’t enjoy a 3 a.m. alarm if you’re still driving back from gypsum dunes.

Special shapes, Music Fiesta and upsells

Shape balloons - animals, cartoon characters, odd corporate mascots - launch on dedicated mornings. They’re crowd magnets, which means tighter rope lines and earlier arrivals.

Music Fiesta on Saturday, October 10, 2026 layers live music onto the Night Magic Glow. It requires both a general admission ticket and a separate Music Fiesta ticket: the lawn tier is $30, the standing Dance Box $55, and the Ultimate Glow & Groove VIP $300. Gates open at 3 p.m., music starts at 4 p.m.

Gondola Club, glamping tents and concierge golf carts are real products, but they’re hospitality upsells, not substitutes for learning how sessions work. Start with GA plus a hotel you can reach before sunrise.

Wind scrubbed your only morning? Use the rain-check rules and watch the Fiesta app - don’t assume tomorrow’s ticket is automatic until staff validate the policy at a booth.

After balloons: keep the New Mexico loop going

One morning is a coin flip on wind, and the rain-check policy only helps if you still have a session left to spend it on - so buy from the official site and book the room while the airlines still have seats.
