New Hampshire Travel Guide: White Mountains and Lakes

New Hampshire packs no sales tax on purchases, Mount Washington’s 6,288-foot summit, and the Kancamagus Highway into a state you can cross in under three hours - yet most visitors wish they’d booked one extra night once they see how fast October rooms disappear. The useful mental map is three bands: White Mountains (Kanc, Franconia, presidential peaks), Lakes Region (Winnipesaukee and slower color), and Seacoast (Portsmouth, late peak).

Fall timing for 2026, from Yankee Magazine’s official materials (checked 27 August 2026): Great North Woods early peak late September to early October; statewide color mid-to-late September through mid-October; Yankee’s Peak Fall Foliage Map puts most of New Hampshire in early to mid-October, with the strongest reds in the first half of October (Foster’s Daily Democrat reporting Yankee, 20 August 2026). Airports and the Boston option

Manchester-Boston Regional (MHT) is the closest major airport to the White Mountains - about an hour to North Conway in clear traffic. Boston Logan (BOS) adds distance but wins on international flights and pairs with the Amtrak Downeaster to Exeter, Durham or Dover for the seacoast without driving I-93 on a Friday afternoon.

Either way, rent a car. The Kanc has no gas stations on the forest stretch, and outlet malls in North Conway aren’t a substitute for fuel in Lincoln.

The Kancamagus Highway

The Kancamagus Scenic Byway is the eastern, leaf-peeping half of New Hampshire Route 112 between Lincoln and Conway - roughly 34 miles of national forest with no commercial strip. The full Route 112 crosses 56 miles of the state from Bath to Conway (NHDOT mileage via Wikipedia’s Route 112 article, checked 27 August 2026).

Plan two to three hours with stops at Lower Falls, Rocky Gorge and the pull-offs that back up first on Saturdays. Franconia Notch and the presidential range

North of Lincoln, I-93 cuts through Franconia Notch State Park - Flume Gorge, the Cannon Mountain ski area - its aerial tram was retired in October 2025 and a replacement is not due before 2028 - and trailheads into the Franconia Ridge loop serious hikers treat as a summer commitment. In fall, you’re here for roadside color and short walks, not a presidential traverse.

The Presidential Range - Washington, Adams, Jefferson - dominates the northern skyline from Cherry Valley and Route 2 east of Jefferson. Mount Washington’s summit is the highest point in the northeastern United States at 6,288 feet; weather up there is alpine even when Conway feels like sweater weather.

Mount Washington without hiking

You don’t have to climb roughly 4,200 feet of elevation gain from Pinkham Notch to claim the summit. The Mount Washington Cog Railway climbs from Bretton Woods; the Auto Road opens to private vehicles when conditions allow - both are weather-cancelled more often than tourists expect, so build a backup valley day.

The Conway Scenic Railroad and Hobo Railroad out of Lincoln sell foliage seats that sell out before hotels do on peak October Saturdays. They’re touristy; they’re also the right choice if someone’s mobility doesn’t match the Kanc pull-offs.

North Conway, Jackson and outlet economics

North Conway is base camp for the Kanc - outlet shopping, pancake houses, and the only traffic lights you’ll see for miles. Jackson is smaller, prettier and pricier: covered bridge at the village entrance, cross-country ski heritage, and inns that feel like wedding venues because they are.

New Hampshire’s lack of sales tax makes the outlets a real savings on gear - not a fake tourist trap - but don’t let Conway eat a day you’d rather spend west on the Kanc. Lodging here is the first to sell out when Yankee’s map says early to mid-October peak.

Lakes Region: when mountains have already peaked

Lake Winnipesaukee and the Lakes Region towns (Meredith, Wolfeboro) peak after the highest White Mountain passes in most years - Yankee’s Monadnock and Lakes band hits middle peak end of September to mid-October, which in practice often means mid-October lake color while the Kanc passes fade.

That’s useful sequencing: do mountains first, lake second, seacoast last if you’re still hunting red maples.

Seacoast and Portsmouth

Portsmouth is a compact harbor city with restaurants worth a dinner even when leaves are still green. The Downeaster serves Dover and Durham on the way to Boston; from Durham, a short bus or taxi reaches Portsmouth without White Mountain driving. Coastal NH peaks later than Franconia Notch - treat the seacoast as your final foliage leg or as a city break when rain closes summit roads.

For a longer northern loop, cross into Maine for Portland and Acadia after the White Mountains - Maine’s northwest woods track Vermont/NH timing more closely than the coast does.

Lodging logic for leaf season

Book North Conway or Lincoln before you buy flights when dates touch Columbus Day. Midweek in the first half of October matches Yankee’s strongest red window on the 2026 Peak Fall Foliage Map (Foster’s/20 August 2026).

• Lincoln / Franconia: best for I-93 north, Flume Gorge, Cog Railway.
• North Conway / Jackson: best for Kanc eastbound mornings.
• Lakes: mid-October color chasers and families who want boat cruises.
• Portsmouth: Boston train access, late color, fewer leaf-peeper traffic jams.

Compare with Vermont’s Stowe-Woodstock axis if you’re splitting a week across two states - Vermont’s kingdom peaks slightly earlier than Conway in Yankee’s model.

A four-day White Mountains skeleton

Day 1: Arrive MHT or BOS, sleep Lincoln, short Franconia walk. Day 2: Kancamagus west to east at sunrise, North Conway lunch, Jackson dinner. Day 3: Mount Washington excursion or Conway Scenic Railroad if weather wins. Day 4: Lakes cruise or Portsmouth seacoast on the way out.

Adjust against live Visit NH and Yankee reports - a long 2026 season means you can slide each block by a few days without flying home to brown leaves.

Hiking vs driving: pick one story

New Hampshire sells 4,000-foot peaks the way Vermont sells syrup, and fall is the safest season for many hikers - no ice axes, fewer black flies. That said, Franconia Ridge and Mount Washington are not “because the rental car has AWD” hikes. If your group isn’t already trail-fit, commit to driving the Kanc, Cannon’s tram, and one short waterfall walk rather than turning a leaf trip into a rescue headline.

The White Mountain National Forest parking lots at Lincoln Woods and Crawford Notch fill early when colors peak. Use the Forest Service trailhead pages for live lot status; don’t assume a 10 a.m. start works on the first Saturday of October.

Tax-free shopping without wasting a foliage day

New Hampshire’s no sales tax is real on clothes, gear and souvenirs - it’s not a marketing gimmick like some outlet “deals.” North Conway’s strip is convenient after a Kanc drive, but don’t burn your only peak-color morning in a mall parking lot. Buy the fleece after sunset on the highway day, or stop in Manchester on the way to MHT if your flight leaves mid-afternoon.
